Genesis Chapter 13 records the separation of Abram and Lot and the renewal of God’s promise.
Abram and Lot return from Egypt with great possessions. Strife arises between their herdsmen because the land cannot support them both. Abram says to Lot, “Let there be no strife between you and me… Separate yourself from me.” Lot lifts up his eyes, sees the Jordan Valley is well watered like the garden of the Lord, and chooses it for himself, settling near Sodom. Abram dwells in the land of Canaan. The Lord says to Abram, “Lift up your eyes and look… for all the land that you see I will give to you and to your offspring forever.” Abram moves his tent and settles by the oaks of Mamre at Hebron, and builds an altar to the Lord.
